BAYOU BORN

Performing with Loop38. This program is conceived of as a single meditation to be performed without breaks to be enjoyed with the Turrell Skyspace at the Live Oak Meeting House. The central work is a graphic score by Annea Lockwood written in honor of Houston-born Pauline Oliveros. The live performance of bayou-borne will feature six musicians, with each person representing one of the local Houston bayous.

“Where is home? Is it where we are born? Or where we live most of our lives? Is it with the family we leave behind or with the new ones we create?

Cruzar la Cara de la Luna follows three generations of a single family, divided by countries and cultures. As a Mexican-American man deals with the approaching death of his father, he is forced to face these questions about his own place in the world – straddling two cultures – as well as that of his immigrant father and his American daughter.”

The Music of LJ White

Ms. Smither joins Washington University faculty LJ White for a concert of his works, alongside her PushBack collaborator, Ben-Roidl Ward. Washington University, St. Louis.

LJ White's music serves ideals of direct, focused and socially relevant expression, assimilating an unrestricted array of influences through strange and evocative sonorities and rhythms, concise and self-evident gestures, and apposite forms.  He has worked with some of the most exciting performers in new music, including Alarm Will Sound, Ensemble SIGNAL, Ensemble Dal Niente, the JACK Quartet, the San Francisco Contemporary Music Players, Third Angle Ensemble, Third Coast Percussion, Volti, and members of the International Contemporary Ensemble, Roomful of Teeth, the Talea Ensemble, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars.

Performed by the refined Tesla Quartet and Canadian rising star Alexandra Smither in her first New York appearance.
